索溪峪景区西与张家界国家森林公园相连，北与天子山毗邻，总面积160平方公里。其处于峰林演化史的晚年期，境内山水相映，描绘出一幅“山因水更奇，水因山更秀”的奇妙画卷。索溪峪包括黄龙洞、宝峰湖、水绕四门、十里画廊、西海和百丈峡等六个小景区。

水绕四门地处武陵源中心，是张家界森林公园的东大门、索溪峪风景区的西大门。因金鞭溪、矿洞溪、鸳鸯溪、龙尾溪四条溪流在这块不足200平方米的山谷盆地里盘绕汇流而得名。

置身其中，但见“水在山间流，人似水中游”，可称天下绝景。

境内主要景点有张良墓、四十八将军岩、旗杆峰、九天银练、梓木岗田园等。
